Communicating During Outages and Emergencies

How HOAs can quickly share reliable updates when water, power, or access is disrupted.

When service is disrupted, timely and consistent updates reduce frustration. Establish your channels ahead of time—email lists, text alerts, website banners, and posted notices in common areas—so residents know where to look.

Craft clear messages that include:

  • What is happening and which buildings or amenities are affected.
  • Who is responding (utility, vendor, or board) and an estimated timeline.
  • Safety instructions, contact information, and the next scheduled update time.

After the issue is resolved, send a brief follow-up with any preventative steps the community should take and when the next status review will occur. Practice these steps during drills to keep the process smooth.
